The End of Swim Lessons

Today was Caleb's last swim lesson for now. He will be beginning VPK next month, so we won't be able to do lessons again until next summer.

Caleb has really enjoyed his lessons and has improved greatly. He is doing better with keeping his face in the water which helps him to stay horizontal and swim faster. His backstroke is his best stroke right now. He has good technique so far, but he is lacking in strength. I have a feeling that he will be stronger next summer and will be able to swim farther for longer.

We are very proud of Caleb and all of his hard work learning to swim. He has come a far way since we started in February.

Silly Boys

I am outnumbered by three very silly boys. Yes, I am including Allen, too! Tonight, Daddy decided to put Eli on Caleb's shoulders. They then ran all over the house laughing hysterically. Luckily, no one got hurt. I don't think it was the safest thing to do, but they sure had a good time.

Fly Away, Butterfly!

Our Monarch butterflies emerged today from their chrysalises. We had been checking them every morning as we had heard that they tended to emerge in the early morning. Unfortunately, today was the first day we forgot. When we did remember, it was close to lunch time, and they had obviously been out of their chrysalises for some time. We were all very excited to see the butterflies. They were so beautiful. I took some pictures before we opened the mesh container to let them go. I was hoping that Caleb could hold one or that we could get some good shots of them on our plants before they flew off. But they flew off as soon as they were released.

We are going to have to try taking care of chrysalises again the future. It was something we were all interested in.

Like Father, Like Son

Caleb has discovered Daddy's Risk games and has been playing with them constantly. Allen has two versions - one regular and one Lord of the Rings. Caleb is a bit young to play the real game, but he and Daddy have come up with a modified version that still involves taking over the other person's territory. When Caleb is not playing with Daddy, he likes to get the pieces out and play with them. Sometimes, he plays on the game board, but other times, he sets up blocks for forts and such. The bottom pictures show a cave for cave trolls.

Butterfly Encounter

Since we have a few Monarch caterpillar eggs, I decided we ought to get some more milkweed plants for them to eat once they hatch. I took the boys to the Butterfly Encounter at Lukas Nursery today. Caleb and I have been visiting there since it first opened and he was really little. We took Eli with us last year, but he was too small to enjoy or appreciate it. What a difference a year makes! Eli loved the encounter today. It is basically a greenhouse sort of set up with lots of butterfly and caterpillar friendly plants. They have expanded it a great deal since they first opened and have very knowledgable staff.

There was no one else there today, so the boys had free reign to walk any where they wanted to within the encounter. I showed them some different caterpillars and chrysalises I saw. Eli absolutely loved seeing the butterflies flying around and kept pointing to every one he saw. He found one that was under a bench and proceeded to lay down on his belly to watch it. It was neat seeing how interested he was in them. Caleb, our map man, looked for butterflies that matched the laminated identification sheet.

I love butterflies myself, so it warms my heart that the boys love them, too.

Welcome to Bugville!

Today was a bug-filled day for us. This morning we went to a co-op on butterflies. Miss Wendy brought some milkweed plants with Monarch caterpillar eggs and caterpillars on them. She also brought some chrysalises. We were lucky enough to bring a plant with some eggs on it and two chrysalises home. The boys and I are excited about watching the eggs hatch and watching the butterflies emerge from their chyrsalises.

Once home, we discovered strange looking white bugs on our hibiscus plants. At first, I thought there was mold growing on the plants but soon saw that the mold moved. I looked the bugs up online and discovered that they were mealy bugs. What I thought was mold is a powdery wax they secrete to protect themselves as they suck on the plant's juices. You can learn more about mealy bugs here.

Near the front door, we also discovered an exoskeleton that a grasshopper had molted. Edited to add: It was several weeks before we saw the grasshopper himself. Check him out here.

This evening, I went out to water our tomato plants and noticed that one of the unripe, green tomatoes was missing its top. I quickly saw the culprit was a brown striped caterpillar who had been eating it. I looked that up as well and found out it was a tomato fruitworm moth caterpillar after much searching online. They are also known as corn earworms as they also like to eat corn. I am pretty sure that this caterpillar's relatives are the ones behind the demise of our corn plants. You can learn more about tomato fruitworms here.

It is amazing how many cool things you can learn while you are living your life.

Yogurt

Eli successfully used a spoon to feed himself yogurt this morning. He didn't make too much of a mess and really enjoyed doing it himself. What a big boy!

Caleb's New Wheels

Caleb has a new big boy bicycle that we got from his friend Bryan. He took it for a spin today and had a lot of fun.
